BBCRadioGloucsSoil threats and RECARE discussed on BBC local radio

A partner in RECARE, Jane Mills, from University of Gloucestershire in UK, was interviewed by BBC Radio Gloucestershire about the importance of soil and how it is often forgotten and undervalued as a global resource.  The interview was broadcast on 1st January 2017 and can be listened on the BBC website until 31st January. The interview starts at 1 hour 11 minutes into the programme.  World Soil Day was celebrated on 5th December and Jane explained to listeners why soil warrants its own global awareness day and how our soil has been affected by intensive agricultural land management, expansion of cities and road building, climate change and heavy farm machinery. She spoke about how good farming practices can help protect our soil and described how RECARE is looking for practical solutions to these soil threats.

The international conference FUEGORED2016, organized by the Portuguese team of RECARE, started today and will continue until 26th November.  The topic of the conference is related to post-fire management, inspired by the RECARE Portuguese case study. It integrates other topics, such as fire occurrence, and their impacts on vegetation, soil and geomorphological processes.  The 24th and 26th of November are dedicated to field trips, in the municipalities of Miranda do Corvo and Tondela, to demonstrate post-fire measures to soil conservation, which are being studied within the RECARE project. The post-fire measures applied in areas affected by 2013 fire in the municipality of Tondela were promoted by the City Council and parishes’ administration and supported by PRODER funds.

The other conference days are devoted to oral presentations, for younger researchers on the 23rd, and for all in the 25th. The program for the 25th (http://fuegored2016.web.ua.pt/downloads/FuegoRED2016_Program_en.pdf) will also include lectures from invited keynote speakers about the mapping of burnt areas, post-fire management policies in Portugal, and post-fire management in the region of Valencia and Galicia.

RECARE partner receives UNCCD Dryland Champions award

Dryland ChampionCongratulations to the University of Aveiro (UA) in Portugal, one of the RECARE partners, for being awarded the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Dryland Champions award. The prize was given in recognition for their research work on desertification, which included their research in the RECARE project

This distinction was received on the 17 June of 2016, during the celebrations of the World Day to Combat Desertification, organized by the Institute for Nature and Forest Conservation (ICNF). This award aims to distinguish individuals, and/or organizations and business that make a practical contribution to sustainable land management (SLM).

The distinction is due to the work of a research team of the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM), lead by Celeste Coelho, emeritus professor of the Department of Environment and Planning of the UA. This research has promoted the engagement of local stakeholders and communities in finding solutions for SLM.  More details about the University of Aveiro's case study research within the RECARE project can be found here
